Stathead Adds Filters for Scoring Within Games

Posted by Jonah Gardner on July 19, 2023

We're excited to announce that we've brought one of the most commonly requested features to Stathead! All Team Game Finders on all sports now have filters for scoring and margin by quarter/inning/period.

To see this new feature in action, you'll want to go to the Game Filters section in any Team Game Finder tool. Once you open the menu of filters, select the very last one: "Score/Margin by Quarter." Once you do, you'll see a lot of options like this:

Once you've got the filters open, you can just plug in the numbers you're looking for. With this new feature, you can answer questions like:

How many NBA teams have scored 50+ points in a quarter?

How many MLB teams have won games where they trailed by 5+ runs going into the 9th inning?

When's the last time an NFL team outscored an opponent by 21+ points in a quarter?

When was the last time an NHL team scored 8 goals in the third period?

To explore these new filters, and a whole lot more, log into Stathead or sign up for a free trial today!

Now THIS is the kind of feature that makes this site great. In-depth statistical searches that go beyond just points/runs/goals and not silly "grid" games.

Wow, 50-point quarters -- 12 since 2019, but only 3 before that going back to 1991! Great stuff as always here in the sports-reference universe...

Also it's a shame this game doesn't make the "trailed by 5+ runs" list: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT200107281.shtml -- the Pirates trailed by 4 going into the 9th but gave up 2 runs in the top of the 9th, so ultimately down 6...IIRC they were down to their last STRIKE with the bases empty before the comeback capped by Brian Giles' walkoff grand slam, off Billy Wagner no less. Perhaps another tweak to the query would catch a couple more of those...
