RSCI Rankings Added to CBB-Reference

17th September 2018

On Basketball-Reference, we have a feature that shows players' peak rankings in the Recruiting Services Consensus Index (RSCI) back to the high school class of 1998. We have now gone ahead and added this feature to our College Basketball Reference site as well. This will be available in a yearly format in the Awards section, and they will also appear where applicable on player pages under their bio section. Team pages will display RSCI rankings in the roster section so it's easier to see which teams had more highly-touted prospects to work with.

To recap, the RSCI service is based on gathering several national recruiting lists and calculating a consensus ranking from there. The rankings found on Basketball-Reference and College Basketball Reference are the final rankings for each year. If you want more information on how the process works, as well as additional data like in-season rankings (fall, pre-summer, etc.), you can refer to RSCIhoops.com.

If you have any questions or suggestions concerning our site's features, feel free to contact us through our feedback form.

Baseball Records Through A Calendar Day

12th September 2018

This season, the Boston Red Sox have been on quite a tear, with a .683 winning percentage after their September 11th win over Toronto. Now you can compare them with other teams through September 11 using our new Records Through Calendar Day tool in the Play Index. Since 1969 (the beginning of the Divisional Era), the 2018 Red Sox have the fifth-best winning percentage of any team through September 11. Here's a look at the top 10:

Best Win-Loss Percentage Through September 11 Table

Another storyline earlier in the season was how impressive the Angels' 12 wins and the Mets' 11 wins through April 13 were. Of course, since then those two teams have fallen out of the playoff race, but searching for the other teams in recent memory that have racked up wins early in the calendar show that April success is very hit or miss in informing rest-of-season performance. Here's a look at teams in past seasons with double-digit wins through April 13:

Most Wins Through April 13 Table

Combined Penalty and Penalty Yard Searches on PFR

7th September 2018

Another addition we've made to Pro-Football-Reference's Team Game Finder tool are searches for combined accepted penalties in a game, as well as combined accepted penalty yards in a game. Previously, you could already search penalties on either side, but now you can have a fuller look at games by searching for those combined figures.

This addition comes just as the first game of the 2018 season finished with a combined 26 penalties. While it's a common refrain that Week 1 is particularly penalty-happy due to teams shaking off rust, here's a look at how high Thursday's matchup finished among Week 1 games in the post-merger era (since 1970).
