Japanese Baseball (1936-yesterday) – Baseball-Reference.com

30th August 2013

Japanese Baseball History - Baseball-Reference.com.

We are very pleased to announce that we have added complete NPB stats back to the start of professional baseball in Japan in 1936. This work was compiled from existing sources by Ted Turocy (creator of the Chadwick Baseball Bureau). These stats are updated daily, so you can track Wladimir Balentien's chase of Sadaharu Oh.

This data was also incorporated into our MLB players pages. So if you go to Ichiro's page, you will now see a "Show NPB/Minors" link above his batting stats and clicking on that will show you his NPB stats along with his mlb stats.

Team Offensive & Defensive Schemes Added

23rd August 2013

Thanks to the tireless research of Neil Paine we now have team offensive schemes & defensive alignments on team pages going back as far as 1957. I've also added team and opponent offense and defense as options on the team game finder tool, if for instance you want to find how teams performed against the 3-4 defense in 2012. Think we have a team's scheme wrong? Help us fix it!

Filter Play Finder results by individual player

14th August 2013

We've added a new feature to the play finder that you may have already seen around the site: you can now filter search results by particular players. For instance, when looking at 2012 passing on third or fourth down if you click the "View player »" link next to Matthew Stafford, you can view the same results filtered down to just Stafford. You can refine this further by clicking the link next to a particular receiver, so if you want just Stafford's third and fourth down passes to Calvin Johnson, we have you covered. This filter is available for passers, receivers, and rushers, so you can also use it to find something like all Adrian Peterson rushes of 10+ yards in 2012. Links to year-by-year breakdowns are also available under "Rush Plays" and "Pass Plays" on each player's player page passing, rushing, or receiving table.

In other play finder news, we've added play data from the 1999 season to our database if you want to go back and relive the glory days of the greatest show on turf.

As it turns out, if the Giants "hang on" to the bottom spot in the West, it will mark only the second time in the World Series era (1903-present) that a champion went on to finish last the following season. The only other team to do that were the 1998 Florida Marlins, who infamously jettisoned all of their talent a year after winning it all.
