Team Starting Lineup & Pitching Staff Charts

16th May 2013

Here's a cool feature you may not have seen, since we added them before the season:

2013 MLB Team-by-Team Starting Lineups
2013 MLB Team-by-Team Pitching Staffs

Those links take you to pages with a master table of every team's most frequent starters at each position and a master table of every team's most common pitchers (arranged into staffs). It's a good way to see who the regular players are for the entire league in one glance, as well as to compare the Wins Above Replacement each team's been getting from each position. Check it out!

DraftStreet $300 FreeRoll for Sports Reference Users (sponsor post)

13th May 2013

This post was provided by DraftStreet.com, a sponsor of Sports Reference sites.

DraftStreet.com is a fantasy sports website that offers players a chance to compete for free or real money in daily or weekly fantasy sports competitions. Fantasy users don’t have to play only against their friends or co-workers in private leagues, or go chasing after their money once they win their leagues. A first rounder tearing his ACL, no longer ruins your fantasy season. DraftStreet is the answer to all of these problems. DraftStreet offers a variety of different leagues and game-types. They offer salary cap, snake drafts and pick 'em style drafts. You can play in head-to-head, double-up and guaranteed prize pool leagues. If you dream of that big payday, the guaranteed prize pool leagues are for you. League entry fees range from free to $2 to over $400. They offer leagues for MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, PGA, NCAAFB and NCAAB.

DraftStreet’s salaries fluctuate from day to day (depending on if someone gets hurt, has a long homerun streak going, stinks like BJ Upton, etc), so it takes a real keen baseball mind to find the value picks to make sure your salary stays below the $100,000 ceiling. Value plays can usually be found in prospects, players that have a good history but are slumping, and players with good power (for a hitter) or good stuff (for a pitcher).

The Miami Marlins are a good place to look when it comes to prospects. Jose Fernandez was a bargain when he got called up at $7k and even with his strong April, he’s still cheap enough to get your moneys worth. Five tool prospect Marcell Ozuna is another guy that not many knew about before his 4 hit game against Roy Halladay. Even after that, he’s still an under the radar prospect that will give you great value for now.

New Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is slumping and because of that, his price is down for someone with his talent. Blue Jays catcher JP Arencibia has great power and won’t hit for much average, so his price is low and gives you good value. Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow has tremendous stuff, but he’s just as likely to strike out 10 guys as he is to giving up 6 earned in 3 innings.

Do you think you’re the best fantasy player out there? Do you wish that drafting Jose Reyes and Giancarlo Stanton didn’t cost you your fantasy season? If so, DraftStreet is the place for you! Deposit now and use the code “BR30” and you will receive a 30% bonus on your first deposit.

Daily Player Stat Logs

9th May 2013

Today, we added a new feature to B-R: Daily Batting and Pitching roundups for the previous day's games.

At the most basic level, these reports let you see a (sortable) list of everyone who hit or pitched in baseball yesterday, but they also come with the capacity to find player stats over the past N days (where N is customizable), to find players at various minor-league levels, and to find players in specific organizations. We list a number of sample searches on the form, so you can get an idea of what the Daily Stats tool can give you.

So feel free to play around with it, give it a try, and let us know if you found a bug or have a suggestion.

Game Previews

7th May 2013

If you're a Baseball-Reference addict, chances are you've seen the link for our Game Day Previews on the front page of the site. But if not: each morning, we generate preview pages for the day's MLB games.

These pages contain detailed info on the probable starting pitchers (including a list of their most recent starts), recent results for each team, the last 10 head-to-head matchups between the two teams, and active rosters for each team (including platoon splits and head-to-head results against the each member of the opponent's pitching staff/lineup). Be sure to check them out if you're watching the game at the ballpark or at home.

And to keep up with the latest action, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for our previews, or you can sign up to have them delivered to you automatically via e-mail. And if you don't want to sort through the whole league when trying to find your favorite team, you can bookmark the link to your favorite team's page, which gets updated daily for each upcoming game.

Finally, if you want to see who was on a roster at an earlier point in the season, you can call up archived copies of previews for every game this year by using the "Find Date" drop-down menus at the top of the previews portal.
