All-Rookie Voting History Added to Basketball Reference

Posted by Mike Lynch on May 24, 2024

Earlier in the week we added All-Rookie voting for the 2023-24 season to Basketball Reference on our Award Voting page and player pages. We also took this opportunity to flesh out most of the history of the voting for this honor thanks to the research efforts of NBA historian Todd Spehr.

So you will now see information on All-Rookie team votes all the way back to 1965 on our Awards Voting pages for each season. Additionally, this appears on player pages in the 'Appearances on Leaderboards, Awards, and Honors' section labeled as 'All-Rookie Voting Shares.'

NBA All-Rookie teams were first recognized in 1962-63, when it was selected by the Newspaper Enterprise Association. Unfortunately, we do not have this voting. Coaches took over voting for the award in 1964-65, which is the first season for which we have voting details. Coaches continued to vote for this award through 2012-13. Media took over in 2013-14. We are missing all voting information in 1962-63, 1963-64 and 1975-76. We're missing voting information for 3 of the First Teamers in 1977-78 (Bernard King, Jack Sikma and Norm Nixon) and 4 of them in 1978-79 (Mychal Thompson, Ron Brewer, Reggie Theus and Terry Tyler). And the votes are incomplete in 1966-67 and 1983-84 (meaning we don't have a full accounting of players who received votes but didn't make the All-Rookie team).

We hope you enjoy this addition. Please let us know if you have any of the missing data.
