Find Standings for Any Date in NFL History

Have you ever had a memory of a specific date from years ago and thought to yourself "Gee, what a wonderful memory. I recall almost everything about that day: the weather, who I was with, the song playing on the radio. But I feel so incomplete because I just can't recall what the NFL standings were on that day." Well, fret over your imperfect memories no longer, because you can now look up the standings through any date or week in NFL or AFL history!

Now you can fully appreciate your fond memories of the Balloon Boy Hoax by creating false narratives such as claiming that this hoax might have ruined the Giants season (5-0 pre balloon boy and 3-8 post). Or you could discover life-affirming facts such as the Bears leading the NFL in scoring differential on the day Mike Ditka was born.

We hope you enjoy this new tool. It can be accessed by hovering over the "boxscores" link towards the right end of the gray bar running across near the top of the page and clicking "Find Standings on a Date."

    Very nice addition. One thing I have noticed is that with the historical standings using the 2nd example above with the Patriots and Jets at 3-2, it shows 12 teams with a “+” beside them signifying they have clinched a Wildcard/Playoff spot. Can this be fixed, no team had clinched a Playoff spot at that stage of the season?

    Obviously it is showing the teams that ultimately ended up clinching berths at season end. This could therefore be changed showing an *or + to determine Division Winner and Wildcard. While that is useful, what would be great to know historically is when teams actually clinched Playoff positions and Division titles and this could be first shown against each team in the Week they actually clinched and subsequently thereafter.

    For instance, I am aware of 4 teams that clinched Division titles after playing their 11th game of the season, notably the 1985 Bears, 1997 49ers, 2004 Eagles and 2007 Patriots. This is the earliest a team has clinched a Division title since 1978. Similarly the 1973 Vikings clinched the NFC Central in Week 9 and the 1972 Dolphins clinched the AFC East in Week 10.
