BBR has been moved from it's old server (called mikan internally at s-r hq) and now is running on a new server (named lebron, don't blame me, it was Neil's turn to name the new machine). This is a much better machine with more RAM and CPU's, so things should now run much faster and more smoothly than they have in the past. Please let us know if you come across any quirks or problems.
One benefit of this is that CFB, CBB and Olympics sites no longer have to share a server with basketball, hockey and football, so they should see their performance improve as well.
If you've spent any time at our sites, you've probably seen the "SHARE" command in red text above a table of stats... but maybe you didn't know what that did, or have forgotten how to use it. No worries -- here's a quick rundown of the features you can access by clicking "SHARE":
Customize rows & columns - Sharing lets you delete certain rows/columns that you don't want to include in your table. Just click the round 'x' button to delete a specific row/column, or the arrow 'x' to get rid of everything to the right (columns) or directly below (rows) the row/column in question.
Export as an HTML table - Clicking 'html
' gives you code to embed the table onto your site (you can even choose to keep S-R's inline style formatting).
Get a link - Choosing Link URL creates an SR tiny URL specifically for the table you created, which can easily be sent to others via twitter or directly linked at your blog.
Export as bbcode - This option lets you copy-and-paste the table into most bulletin board formats.
Export as an iframe - For those who prefer to embed the table within an inline frame.
Export into preformatted text or CSV
Convert table to Wiki formatting - This will turn the table into a format suitable for sites like Wikipedia.
These features are currently active at all Sports-Reference sites except Hockey-Reference, which will be updated either this week or next. Happy sharing!
It's always unfortunate when tragedy intrudes upon the world of sports, like we've seen in college football since the Penn State child abuse scandal broke last fall. Our thoughts are mainly with the victims and their families, but there is also administrative work to be done in the wake of the NCAA's major sanctions against Penn State.
As was the case with violations by Ohio State, USC, and others, we feel that it is important to provide information about what actually happened on the field at the time, as well as what the NCAA considers official in their records. Hopefully this blog post will clear up any future confusion regarding vacated/forfeited wins and how they related to our stats or leaderboards.
Attention readers in the Philly area -- we need users like you to come in and help us improve our sites!
If you're in the vicinity -- our HQ is located in the Mt. Airy section of northwest Philadelphia -- and can spare an hour next week to help us test out some PFR Play Index features (we'll even pay you $50 for your time), please email me your name and a contact phone number.
We are looking for 3 testers, so we may not be able to use everyone. Please remember testing will be done in Philadelphia only.
We're proud to introduce Widgets.Sports-Reference.com, a central destination for those looking to embed updated S-R stat tables on their site or blog. The page linked above contains a way to build various widgets for Baseball, Hockey, Pro Football, and College Football. Watch the following video for an example of how to use the widgets:
As always, send us feedback about new widgets you'd like to see or any issues you encounter while using the widgets.
We've just launched the first stage of our new Sports Reference Widget tool. By clicking the "Embed" tooltip just above any stats table on the site you can now get the code to add our daily updated stats to your site.
See the widgets page for a description of the various features.
We've always had this option with our "Share" tool, but the widgets have the advantage that they'll update daily as our stats pages update.
In the future, we expect to launch additional widgets, like milestone countdowns, division standings, team and league leaders and more. Any suggestions will certainly be considered.
