Summary

For the mixed doubles only players who already played in the singles or doubles tournament were permitted to participate, and the tournament was contested by 16 pairs.

Defending champions [Vika Azarenka] and [Max Mirnyi] from Belarus did not participate due to Azarenko’s pregnancy. The American pair [Bethanie Mattek-Sands] and [Jack Sock] won the gold medal, by beating their compatriots [Venus Williams] and [Rajeev Ram] 6–7, 6–1, 10–7 in the final. It was the first time that a tennis tournament was decided by a match tie-break, the format used for mixed doubles in RIo. There were no clear favourites for this event and the top three seeds all lost their first round matches.
