The two preliminary groups of the men’s Olympic field hockey tournament were won by Belgium and Germany.

After winning against India, Belgium reached the final by beating one of the tournament favorites, their neighbor Netherlands in the semi-finals, but then lost against Argentina by 2-4. After the bronze medal in 1920, this was only the second Olympic medal for a Belgian field hockey team.

Argentina did not only won the gold medal but the first Olympic medal ever for South America in men’s field hockey.

The bronze medal was won by Germany, who did not make it to the final for the first time since 2004 but defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.
