Summary

This was expected to be a two-team duel between Jamaica and the United States but, unlike the 4x100, the Americans were favored in this event. Jamaica had narrowly defeated them at the 2015 World Championships, but the US had won the last five Olympic gold medals. Both won their semi-finals easily.

[Courtney Okolo] put the US into the lead on the opening leg, just ahead of Jamaica’s [Stephanie Ann McPherson]. On the second leg [Natasha Hastings] extended the American lead, but the race was still close. [Allyson Felix] took the baton for the anchor with a 0.42 second lead over Jamaican anchor [Novlene Williams-Mills]. Felix powered away from Williams-Mills and the US had gold in 3:19.06, with Jamaica finishing in 3:20.34. The bronze medal went to Great Britain over Canada, in what seemed like an entirely different race, the Brits finishing 5½ seconds behind Jamaica.
