Russian [Sergey Martynov] had won the 1991 World and the 1992 European Championships. At the 1991 Worlds he defeated Turkey's [Mehmet Akif Pirim] in the final. Both wrestlers made it through the groups in Barcelona and again met in the final, but this time Akif Pirim crushed Matynov, defeating him 13-2. Bronze went to Cuba's [Juan Luis Marén], who defeated Poland's [Włodzimierz Zawadzki] by decision, 5-0. Martynov went on to dominate the featherweights, winning the next three World Championships and the 1993 European Championship, but he would only finish eighth at the 1996 Olympics. Marén would improve to a silver medal in 1996 at Atlanta, just ahead of Akif Pirim who won a second Olympic medal with a bronze.
