The co-favorites were China’s [Tang Jiuhong] and Indonesia’s [Susi Susanti Haditono]. Tang was World Champion in 1991 and won the All-England title in 1992. Susanti had won the All-England title in 1990-91. Susanti advanced to the final without losing a game, but Tang lost in the semis to Korea’s [Bang Su-Hyeon]. In the final, Bang surprisingly won the first game comfortably, 11-5, but Susanti came back to win the final two games and the gold medal. Susanti’s boyfriend, [Alan Budikusuma], also won the men’s singles gold medal. The two gold medals were the first ever won for Indonesia. Susanti’s gold medal was also the first ever Olympic badminton gold medal, as this event finished before the others. In the first round, Sweden’s [Catrine Bengtsson] (SWE) defeated [Martine de Souza] of Mauritius, 11-1, 11-0, in only 8 minutes.
