Wrestling at the 1988 Summer Games: Previous Summer Games ▪ Next Summer Games

Host City: Seoul, South Korea
Venue(s): Sangmu Gynmasium, Seongnam
Date Started: September 28, 1988
Date Finished: September 30, 1988
Format: Two groups (A and B). Double elimination tournament within each group. Top four in each group advance to placement matches for 1st-8th place.

Gold: USA Kenny Monday
Silver: URS Adlan Varayev
Bronze: BUL Rakhmat Sofiadi

The favorite was Soviet [Adlan Varayev] who was the 1987 World Champion and had won the last three European titles. The best American in this class had recently been [Dave Schultz], the 1983 World and 1984 Olympic Champion, who had won medals at the Worlds from 1985-87, but he had been surpassed in the US by [Kenny Monday], who won the US Trials. Monday and Varayev both went undefeated in their groups and met for the gold medal in the final. Varayev was ahead 2-1 with 17 seconds left when Monday made a crotch lift reversal to tie the match, which went into overtime. Early in the extra period Monday grabbed Varayev in a body lock and took him down for 3 points which turned out to be the margin of victory. Monday would compete at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1992 and placing sixth in 1996. Varayev retired from competition after Seoul and became a coach.
