The 1988 weightlifting competition took place at the [Ol-lim-pik Gong-won], or Olympic Weightlifting Gymnasium, which was specially constructed for the Seoul Olympics between August 1984 and April 1986, and later became a musical theatre. The 1988 Olympic weightlifting program was the same as it had been in 1980-84, with 10 events for men only.

Ten nations won medals in 1988, but the Soviet Union was the leader, with eight medals and six gold medals won. They were followed by China, showing itself to be a rising power in the sport, which won five medals but no golds. Bulgaria, always a strong weightlifting nation, was in third place on the medal list, with four medals and was the only nation besides the Soviets to win more than one event, with two.
