The 1982 World Champions were Canadians [Sharon Hambrook] and [Kelly Kryczka], who had comfortably defeated [Tracie Ruiz] and [Candy Costie] (USA) in Guayaquil, Ecuador. But Ruiz and Costie had won the 1983 Pan-American Games, although Hambrook and Kryczka did not compete at that meet. The two North American pairs dominated the event, with Ruiz and Costie winning a fairly close competition. Ruiz returned a few days later to win the solo event.
