JPN Koji Gushiken
Bronze: USA Mitch Gaylord

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. The 1984 gold medal was shared by Japan’s [Koji Gushiken] and China’s [Li Ning]. Li won three apparatus golds in Los Angeles, adding floor exercise and pommelled horse golds, and won six medals in all in 1984. Gushiken was the individual all-around champion in 1984 but this was his only other gold, among the five medals he won. American [Mitch Gaylord] won the bronze medal, one of three apparatus medals he won in 1984, along with a gold medal in the team event for the USA.
