Gold: URS Saypulla Absaidov
Silver: BUL Ivan Yankov
Bronze: YUG Å aban Sejdi

The 1976 gold medalist, [Pavel Pinigin], had won the 1977-78 World titles, but he competed as a welterweight in Moskva, with the Soviet team choosing [Saypulla Absaidov], the 1980 European Champion, for this class. Absaidov had an easy time of it, winning his first three matches by falls, and then defeating the 1979-80 European silver medalist, Bulgaria’s [Ivan Yankov], on points, 6-1. Absaidov then threw Yugoslav Macedonian [Šaban Sejdi] in 7:45 to win the gold medal. Absaidov and Sejdi would again meet in the final of the 1981 World Championships, with Absaidov also winning that match and title. Yankov won the silver medal in Moskva by decisioning Sejdi in the final match, 6-2.
