Soviet [Valentyn Mankin] came in as the favorite. He had won Olympic gold in 1968 in the Finn class and in 1976 in the Tempest, adding a silver in Tempest in 1972. The Tempest was no longer on the Olympic Program so he moved on to the Star class. The competition was close and Austria could have won by placing fourth or higher in the final race, but they finished only ninth, and the gold medal went to Mankin and his crew. This made him the only Olympic sailor, through 2012, to have won gold medals in three different classes. Austrian skipper [Hubert Raudaschl] won his second Olympic silver medal, after also finishing behind Mankin in the 1968 Finn event. He was competing in his fifth straight Olympics, since 1964, and would continue the streak through the 1996 Atlanta Games, making him the first Olympian to compete in nine Olympic Games, but his two silvers would be his only medals.
