From 1952-88, save for their boycott year of 1984, the Soviet Union women won the gold medal in this event, also winning it in 1992 as the Unified Team. But they were challenged in Moskva by Romania, who had defeated them at the 1979 World Championships. In the Soviets absence, Romania would win the gold medal at Los Angeles in 1984. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) won the bronze medal in 1980 as the podium was exactly the same as in 1976.
