Cuba's [Alberto Juantorena] was world-ranked #1 in 1974, was fourth in 1975, and had finished second at the 1975 Pan American Games to Ronnie Ray of the USA. Earlier in Montréal he had won the 800 metres and was trying to become the first since [Paul Pilgrim] in 1906 to win the 400/800 Olympic double. He was favored but the US contingent of [Fred Newhouse], [Herman Frazier], and [Maxie Parks] would be formidable as always. In the final, Newhouse went to the lead and was three metres ahead by the halfway mark. But Juantorena's long strides kept pulling him closer and he caught Newhouse with 20 metres left, pulling away to win by just over a metre.
