Wrestling at the 1972 Summer Games: Previous Summer Games ▪ Next Summer Games

Host City: München, West Germany
Venue(s): Wrestling-Judo Hall, Exhibition Lands (Hall 14), München
Date Started: September 5, 1972
Date Finished: September 10, 1972
Format: Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler.

Gold: URS Shamil Khisamutdinov
Silver: BUL Stoyan Apostolov
Bronze: ITA Gian Matteo Ranzi

This class was completely open as the medals at the most recent tournaments had been spread among several different wrestlers. After five rounds there were four wrestlers remaining – Soviet [Shamil Khisamutdinov], Italy’s [Gian Matteo Ranzi], Bulgarian [Stoyan Apostolov], and West German [Manfred Schöndorfer]. In what would be the final round, Apostolov defeated Schöndorfer and Khisamutdinov defeated Ranzi, both matches decided on points. This eliminated Ranzi and Schöndorfer and gave the gold medal to Khisamutdinov, based on his fifth round decision victory over Apostolov. Ranzi took the bronze medal, based on fewer bad points than Schöndorfer.
