Silver: JPN Koichiro Hirayama
Bronze: ITA Giuseppe Bognanni

The defending gold medalist was Bulgaria’s [Petar Kirov]. As the 1970-71 World Champion and the 1970 European Champion, he came to München as a heavy favorite. He would win the gold medal but it was close as he was extended in the final round by Japan’s [Koichiro Hirayama]. Kirov continued to win, taking the 1974 Worlds and the 1976 Europeans, but he was eliminated early in his attempt to three-peat at Montréal. Hirayama would do better in 1976, winning a bronze medal, after winning the 1974 Asian Games title. Bronze in München went to Italy’s [Giuseppe Bognanni], whose only other international podium was a bronze as a bantamweight at the 1969 Europeans.
