Venue(s): Wrestling-Judo Hall, Exhibition Lands (Hall 14), München
Date Started: August 27, 1972
Date Finished: August 31, 1972
Format: Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

Gold: URS Zagalav Abdulbekov
Silver: TUR Vehbi Akdağ
Bronze: BUL Ivan Krastev

The favorites in 1972 were likely Soviet [Zagalav Abdulbekov], the 1971 World Champion, and Iran’s [Shamseddin Seyyed Abbasi], the 1970 World Champion and runner-up to Abdulbekov in 1971. In round five Seyyed Abbasi lost a decision to Japan’s [Kiyoshi Abe], and was effectively eliminated, and he withdrew. Abdulbekov advanced to the final rounds, along with Bulgarian [Ivan Krastev] and Turkey’s [Vehbi Akdağ], as Abe was eliminated in round six on bad points, despite defeating Akdağ. Abdulbekov then threw Akdağ in the final round, and drew with Krastev to win the gold medal, with Akdağ taking silver by defeating Krastev by decision.
