Date Started: October 17, 1968
Date Finished: October 20, 1968
Format: Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

Gold: URS Borys Hurevych
Silver: MGL Jigjidiin Mönkhbat
Bronze: BUL Prodan Gardzhev

Soviet Ukrainian [Borys Hurevych] was the 1967 World and European Champion and would also win the gold medal in this class at Mexico City. After six rounds there were four wrestlers remaining – Hurevych, defending gold medalist [Prodan Gardzhev] of Bulgaria, Mongolian [Jigjidiin Mönkhbat], and American [Thomas Peckham]. Hurevych and Gardzhev fought to a draw, which eliminated Gardzhev on bad points. Mönkhbat won by decision over Peckham, which eliminated both wrestlers on bad points, giving Hurevych the gold medal. He would later win the 1970 European title, after which he retired. This was the third Olympics for Gardzhev, adding a bronze medal to the gold he won in 1964, after finishing fifth at Roma in 1960. Mönkhbat was the silver medalist in Mexico City, adding that to a bronze he won at the 1967 Worlds.
