Gold: JPN Munji Munemura
Silver: YUG Stevan Horvat
Bronze: GRE Petros Galaktopoulos

Yugoslavian Serb [Stevan Horvat] had been a favorite at the 1964 Olympics, after winning the 1963 World Championships, but placed a disappointing fifth. He again came in as a favorite in 1968, after winning the 1966 Worlds, and was expected to be challenged by Finn [Eero Tapio], the 1967 World Champion and second at the 1967 Europeans to Soviet [Gennady Sapunov], another contender in 1968. After five rounds, Tapio and Sapunov were eliminated on bad points. After six rounds, three wrestlers remained – Horvat, Greek [Petros Galaktopoulos] and Japan’s [Munji Munemura], neither of whom had ever made a podium at a major international. Horvat drew with Munemura and Galaktopoulos, which gave the gold medal to the little-known Munemura, who had defeated Galaktopoulos in round six, as Horvat settled for silver and Galaktopoulos took bronze.
