[Masaaki Kaneko] of Japan had won the 1966-67 World Championships and came in as the favorite. He made the final round along with Bulgarian [Enyu Todorov], the 1968 European Champion, and Iranian [Shamseddin Seyyed Abbasi]. Kaneko decisioned Seyyed Abbasi for the gold medal, after fighting to a draw with Todorov. Todorov took the silver and Seyyed Abbasi the bronze. Seyyed Abbasi would become World Champion in 1970 while Todorov won three consecutive European titles (1968-70). Kaneko retired from wrestling after the 1968 Olympics, never having lost internationally, also winning the 1966 Asian Games gold medal.
