Host City: Ciudad de México, Mexico
Venue(s): University Olympic Stadium, Ciudad de México
Date Started: October 19, 1968
Date Finished: October 20, 1968

Gold: USA United States
Silver: CUB Cuba

In the rarified air of Ciudad de México, the United States and the Netherlands broke the world record in the heats with 43.4. But the Americans had the fastest runners, led by anchor runner [Wyomia Tyus], who had earlier defended her 100 metre gold medal. Despite mediocre exchanges the US won the gold medal with Tyus crossing the line five metres ahead.
