Soviet [Rost'om Abashidze] had won the 1962-63 World Championships and came in as the favorite. In the first four rounds, however, he had two wins by decision and two draws, which eliminated him with 6 bad points. Four wrestlers remained after round four – [Boyan Radev] of Bulgaria, [Heinz Kiehl] of Germany, [Nicolae Martinescu] of Romania, and [Per Svensson] of Sweden, with Radev leading with only 1 bad point. Radev then defeated Martinescu by decision, as did Svensson over Kiehl, which eliminated the other three wrestlers, and gave Radev the gold medal. Svensson and Kiehl were left with 6 total bad points, with Svensson getting the silver based on his victory over Kiehl. Radev would return to win the gold medal again in 1968 at Mexico City, after winning the 1966 World Championships.
