The world record had been broken twice in the Olympic year, first by [Ilsa Konrads] at Sydney in February with 4:45.4, and then by [Chris von Saltza] of the USA at the US Trials in Detroit in August, posting 4:44.5. They both won their heats, with von Saltza’s time of 4:53.6 the fastest by almost six seconds. She easily won the gold medal, pulling out to an early lead, and holding on in the last lap as Sweden’s [Jane Cederqvist], the 800 metre world record holder, finished strongly for the silver medal. The bronze went to [Tineke Lagerberg] of the Netherlands, with Konrads fading and finishing fourth.
