Men's Featherweight, Freestyle

Wrestling at the 1952 Summer Games: Previous Summer Games ▪ Next Summer Games

Host City: Helsinki, Finland
Venue(s): Exhibition Hall I, Helsinki; Exhibition Hall II, Helsinki
Date Started: July 20, 1952
Date Finished: July 23, 1952
Format: Win by fall = 0 points; win by decision = 1 point; loss of any type = 3 points. Three judges gave decisions, thus all decisions were either 2-1 or 3-0. Five bad points eliminated a wrestler. When only three wrestlers remained, if they had not yet met one another, they wrestled further rounds. Medal placements were determined by the match record among the medalists, with bad points as a tie breaker. A wrestler in the medal rounds could continue with 5 or more bad points.

Gold: TUR Bayram Şit
Silver: IRI Nasser Givehchi
Bronze: USA Joe Henson

After five rounds only Turkey’s [Bayram Şit], Iran’s [Nasser Givehchi], and American [Joe Henson] remained. None of the three had faced other so the final round was a true round-robin. Şit won the gold medal by defeating Givehchi by unanimous decision and Henson by fall, while Givehchi won silver with his split decision victory over Henson. Şit was runner-up at the 1954 Worlds and would finish fourth in this class at the 1956 Olympics. Givehchi also competed at the 1956 Olympics, finishing tied for sixth. Henson was already 30-years-old in 1952, and retired from competition after Helsinki, but later became President of the American AAU (Amateur Athletic Union).
