Less a competition than a coronation, the Soviet Union won the gold medal by almost seven total points over the Swiss team that had also finished second in London in 1948 and had been the 1950 World Champion, in the Sovietâs absence. The defending champion was Finland, which won bronze in Helsinki.
There was a slight change in format. In 1936 and 1948 teams consisted of eight members with the top six total scores counting towards the team score. In 1952 teams still had eight members, but only the top five gymnasts counted towards the team score, using their all-around score.
