Of the most recent world champions, only [Søren Jensen] (DEN), champion in 1905, competed. He was also the defending Olympic champion in this event, having won at Athens in 1906. His countryman, [Carl Jensen] (DEN), had been 1907 European champion. Both lost to the Hungarian [Richárd Weisz]. Weisz was a remarkably versatile athlete, having won Hungarian championships in hammer throw, fencing, and weightlifting, as well as the national heavyweight wrestling title five times - 1905-09.
