The format of this event was two round-robin pools of four fencers each. The first to score three touches in each match was the winner. The winners of each pool, [Eugène-Henri Gravelotte] and [Henri Callot], both Frenchmen, then met in the finals to determine the champion. There is no record of other matches being held to determine the other positions. Gravelotte was a medical student who celebrated his victory that night by drinking a glass of retzina (wine) at the Acropolis.
