Biography

David Zogg was a trained electrician, but was better known as an Alpine skier. He competed in Nordic combined in his home country at the 1928 Winter Olympics and in 1931 he was the Swiss national Nordic combined champion, also winning multiple Alpine titles in the 1930s. At the first Alpine World Championship in 1931, he won the slalom and three years later the downhill and combination. In addition, he won four silver medals at World Championships, two each in slalom and downhill. His sister Nini was also one of the top female Alpine skiers, collecting several medals at World Championships. In 1924, David was one of the founders of the first ice hockey club in Arosa. Zogg was involved in a number of mountain films, as a skiing supporting actor, starring Leni Riefenstahl and directed by Arnold Fanck. Between 1939-74 Zogg ran the Arosa ski school and was also a renowned mountaineer. In 1932, he joined Fanck’s film crew on an expedition to Greenland and was a member of the Swiss Himalaya expedition in 1939, which had to be abandoned due to the outbreak of World War II.
