Biography

America-born Charles Williams was a noted portrait and landscape painter. After graduating from Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, Williams went on to study art at Allan Fraser Art College in Arboath, Scotland. On the advice of John Sargent he started a portrait studio in Glasgow, but later also trained under William M. Chase in New York. He gained a considerable reputation as a portraitist in both Britain and America, with exhibitions in Europe and America and one-man shows of his work in London, Paris, Chicago, and New York. Williams painted a number of commissioned portraits of prominent men and women. He also served as an air-raid warden in England during World War II.
