Biography

Bas Veth was a Dutch painter, watercolorist, and political activist for the Boer republics, who also worked as a journalist and businessman. As a painter Veth mostly produced landscapes, river- and sea-scapes. Veth was active in the General Dutch Association supporting the Boer Republic in South Africa, writing newspaper articles and press notices. He also purchased explosives, weapons and ammunition and smuggled them to South Africa. After the Boer Wars Veth moved to Den Haag, where he and his wife divorced and Bas Veth worked as an interpreter.
