West German hurdler Bert Steines, brother of [Günther Steines], participated at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics in the 110 hurdles, after having won a bronze medal at the 1954 Europeans. In 1954-55 he was West German Champion in the 110 hurdles and in 1951 and 1953-56 won the 200 hurdles. Indoors, he added three more titles in 1954-56. Steines also set two indoors world records in 1955 and 1956. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1959 and was vice president of the “Association of Former Athletes” from 1957-67.
