German sculptor and painter Erwin Spuler studied in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. In 1931 he entered the service of the Karlsruhe-situated Majolika manufacture. The architectural ceramic artist mostly produced image and relief tiles, and also some small sculptures. Spuler’s favorite motifs were female nudes, first in the succession of French Impressionism. After World War II Spuler also created ceramic vessels, especially vases and bowls. In addition, he continued work as a painter, draftsman and printmaker. His wife Elizabeth was also a painter.
