Biography

Róbert Söptei started canoeing in 1941. He won five Hungarian championships after 1945, as a member of sportclub KASE. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics Söptei finished seventh in C2-10K alongside his brother [Ernő Söptei]. Róbert also achieved success as a coach of high-level athletes, such as the Olympic champion and later national coach [János Parti], Ferenc Major, and Péter Povázsay, who was the 1975 World Champion. As a coach Söptei took part in three Olympics, those of 1960, 1964, and 1972.
