Biography

Light-heavyweight boxer Jürgen Schlegel from Schwerin was the only East German boxer participating for the mixed German team in 1964, and in 1968 at Mexico City, he represented East Germany, losing in the quarter-finals on both occasions. He was defeated by upcoming Olympic Champions [Cosimo Pinto] from Italy in 1964, and by Soviet-Lithuanian [Danas Pozniakas] in 1968. Earlier in 1964 he won the inter-national qualification bouts against West German non-Olympian Peter Gerber. Schlegel won five East German national titles in 1964-65, and 1968-70. He also won bronze medals at both the 1967 and 1969 Europeans.
