In 1962 Schmidt won the European Championships with the East German medley relay team, setting a new world record 4:40.1, and subsequently the team was named Sports Team of the Year.
Domestically she set 14 East German records and won the national titles over 100 m in 1959-61 and 1963, and over 200 in 1963. By profession, she became a doctor, and moved legally to West Germany in 1984. She then worked as an evaluator in the Department of Supply in Rottweil.
