Biography

Goalkeeper Heinz Schmidt played field hockey for Uhlenhorst Mülheim, winning the West German Championship six times in 1950, 1954-55, 1957-58 and 1960. He participated in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where Germany lost to the Netherlands 0-1 in the quarter-final, and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, when Schmidt won a surprise bronze medal after Germany beat Great Britain 3-1 in the third place match. He was also a member of the West German team that won the unofficial European Championships in 1954.
