Biography

Franz Schelle finished eighth with the West German four-man bob Germany 2 team at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics. In 1955 they won the bronze medal at the World Championships. His team-mates on both occasions were [Hans Henn], [Jakob Nirschel] and [Edmund Koller].

Schelle’s finest moment came in 1962 when he won the gold medal in the four-man bob at the World Championships, this time with [Ludwig Siebert], [Josef Sterff] and [Otto Göbl]. The crew was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. Two years later Schelle finished fifth at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. He won four West German titles; at two-man (with Göbl) in 1960 and 1962, and four man in 1962-63, Schelle was considered to be the pioneer of bobsleighing in Ohlstadt.
