Biography

Al Schoterman was AAU and NCAA hammer throw champion in 1972, competing for Kent State University. At the NCAAs he also finished fourth in the 1970 hammer and was runner-up in 1971. At the AAU Meet, Schoterman placed third in 1971, fifth in 1984, and eighth in 1983. He attempted to make the 1984 US Olympic Team, but just missed, finishing fourth at the US Olympic Trials.

Schoterman later became a track & field coach, coaching the Saudi Arabian national team from 1978-80. He returned to Kent State where he was an assistant coach from 1980-85, and then did personal coaching. He retired from coaching in 2000 and started a home remodeling business.

Personal Best: HT – 70.49 (231-3) (1972).
