Biography

Kazakh sprinter Vitaly Savin made his international début at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he reached the 100 metre quarterfinal and ran the anchor for the Soviet 4x100 m relay, which won the gold medal after the US was eliminated in the first round when they botched the baton pass. At the 1992 Summer Olympics, Savin was eliminated in the semifinal of the 100 m and was fifth as a member of the Unified Team’s 4x100 m relay team. He won a Soviet title in the 100 m in 1991 and a CIS 100 m title in 1992. Savin, by then representing his native Kazakhstan, reached the quarterfinals of the 100 m at 1993 and 1995 World Championships and won a 100 m silver at the 1994 Asian Games. His last major tournament was the 1996 Summer Olympics, where he was eliminated in the heats of the 100.
