Biography

Keith Russell competed for the Dick Smith Swim Gym and started college at Arizona State University (ASU). He was NCAA champion for ASU on springboard in 1968. In 1967 Russell won silver medals at the Pan American Games and Universiade on springboard. Russell did a Mormon Mission to Chile after the 1968 Olympics, and then returned to college at Brigham Young University, where he made All-American in 1972. Russell graduated from BYU in 1973, and then competed at the 1974 World Championships, winning a silver medal on platform and bronze on springboard.

Russell initially pursued a career in business, but remained active in diving. He founded the Mesa Desert Divers and coached the team for 10 years. He was president of the Arizona Diving Association, president of the Professional Diving Coaches Association, and a member of the US Diving Board of Directors. Russell later returned to BYU, becoming head coach there in 1992, where he was named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year 14 times. He coached the US divers at the 1999 and 2001 Universiade.
