Dr. phil. Walter Oberste later served on the academic council at the Department Sports Science of the University in Münster until his retirement in 1996, teaching theology and sports. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics Oberste finished an unfortunate fourth with the 4x400 relay and later stated that the athletes had trained too hard in Australia and were overtrained. At the unofficial 1957 World University Games he then won a silver medal in the 400 and a gold with the relay, as he did two years later at the official Universiade. In 1956, 1957 and 1959 Oberste also won West German Championships with the relay, also winning indoors in 1959. From 1968-72 he was West German national sprint coach.
