Biography

Although he raced technical events at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, Jeremy Nobis later became much better known for his daring and skills at high speed freeriding. He attended Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont for his junior and senior years to hone his skills on snow, was a World Junior Champion at age 17, and skied his first World Cup event the next year.

After making the US Ski team at age 16, Nobis quit the World Cup circuit in 1996 and skied the pro tour for a bit, dabbled in coaching, and worked in ski shops out west. He then turned to freeriding, however, appearing in multiple ski films for Warren Miller Entertainment, Teton Gravity Research, and Matchstick Productions. He was known as “The Icon” for his many death-defying descents of super-steep slopes, had his own special-edition Dynastar ski named for him, and helped design new equipment for freeskiing. Among his best remembered runs were Harvest on Pyramid Peak in Alaska, a 52-degree slope with a 2,000 vertical foot drop, and skiing Mr. Ripple and Cathedral on Greenland, where he had to traverse a crevasse called the Catcher’s Mitt.

Nobis was also known for his wild lifestyle. This also included at least four episodes of being caught driving while impaired, at least one time in a high speed chase. He is the brother of [Shannon Nobis], who also skied for the US at the 1994 Winter Olympics.
