The son of a Scottish-born bank clerk, Herbert Nicol was the youngest of five children. He went on to become a bank clerk and a good rugby player. He was a three-quarter with the Old Edwardians, while his brother William Percy played at full-back for both the Edwardians and the Midlands Counties. The captain of his club side in the 1899-1900 season, Herbert went on to play for the Moseley Wanderers at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
