As Sidney Newey had recorded no significant performances early in 1924, and even failed to achieve a standard medal in the AAAs, he was a surprise choice for the steeplechase at the Olympics. In Paris he managed third in the slowest of three heats, but in the final he injured his knees at one of the barriers, although he managed to complete the race, finishing last.
